Introduction to Womens Self Defence

Women face a variety of different potential attacks from muggings, sexual harassment, sexual assault, rape, domestic violence to physical assault. Allot of attacks are not so much physical but actually physiological in that the power is the main motivational goal and the physical is the means to effect this. It has been recorded that:

• 1 out of 4 women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.
• 4 out of 5 women who fight back will get themselves out of the situation.
• 1 in 20 women in England have been a victim of rape according to Home Office Statistics.
• Almost 1 in 5 reported rapes in London are now drug assisted.
• Attacks on Children according to the Home Office find that 25% of rape victims are children.
• About 50% of child abuse victims never report the abuse according to the National Commission of Inquiry into the Prevention of Child Abuse.

With these statistics you need to learn how to defend yourself, well that would be what an instructor that doesn’t know what they are talking about will say to you. RAID is about empowerment within a situation and environment, its all well and good learning technique after technique but unless you feel empowered you will never use anything you have learnt when you need it. Types of Attackers Women face

There are many types of attacker on the street but the categories that raid has classified them under are lone and group, the reason for this, is that they fall under our initial anatomy of defence and the assumption rule which is covered in the RAID course. To detail the motive of attack is impossible as there are too many variables and scenarios that you could imagine. We have outlined two main headings for you and annotated some simple examples: 

Types of Rape

There are many types of rape nowadays and this section will provide you with a clearer picture of what the types are. Be under no illusion just because it falls under a different category they all hold the same consequences and should also receive the same level of response in your defensive concept. Date rape The media has aided in the inaccurate naming of this new date rape which is not new; men have been raping known women for ages and well before they stuck another label to it. The meaning of date rape is by being raped by a known man, or someone you are having a date with, it is claimed that this is not as traumatic as being raped by a complete stranger. Like all relationships they are developed on trust and when the woman says no irrespective of the relationship, it means no. Consent is something that is negotiated on each and every occasion and not taken for granted..  

Drug Rape

Drug rape Everyone has heard of the drug rohypnol which has been said to be used in this form of rape. However the drug rape label was again created by media, the real cause of drug rape is the rapist themselves, well before rohypnol, alcohol was given to get women drunk to that they couldn’t remember what had happened. If drugs are used, depending on the drug it may render you helpless physically to do anything or possibly a loss of memory.   

Holiday Rape

Holiday rape We presume holiday rape to mean that women get raped on holiday by foreign men, however in many cases the rape is by men of the same nationality. The misuse of power by men is a global thing and if you look at women that travel in groups of twos or more overseas to relax and have fun the nightlife and it’s associated exploits are a perpetrators paradise.  

Marital Rape

Marital rape Marital rape of a women by their husband when it is non-consensual became illegal in 1991, before then it was considered that women consented to men once and for all time once married. A former special constable who raped his wife 7 times over 5 days after she told him she was leaving him was jailed for 10 years after he kept her shackled to a radiator. This case would be one of a kind as it is hard to get a prosecution nowadays. .
