Introduction to Dealing with Conflict
People usually try to avoid conflict. Even simply things like sending your food back in a restaurant if there is a hair in your food or lipstick mark on your glass seems to be hard for most of us as we try to avoid confrontation. This is the time to challenge yourself and create assertiveness skills, as these are just as important as the physical elements of personal defence. The saying goes if you cannot deal with small issues such as those mentioned, how could you possibly deal with more serious situations. People usually don't know what to say or how to approach a difficult situation and when they finally say something, it generally makes the situation worse.
Almost every conflict starts with a delivery system which can be verbal or physical and when the attacker probes you if you have a lack of confidence, knowledge or experience in dealing with the situation it can turn physical just because of what you said or did. The RAID system covers conflict management from the early phase when the conflict can be avoided, through verbal de-escalation and physical distraction through to the physical, however at all stages the ultimate goal is to avoid the physical. You will gain confidence to deal with different type of conflicts and situations from the word go.
